Saturday’s racing consisted of two lap windward / leeward courses with a separator mark at the top and gate at the bottom. The morning was light winds with everyone starting in A rigs, the breeze built and we called an early lunch and everyone returned to sailing with B rigs. As the afternoon got on some of the races were at the upper end of the B’s. The racing was clean and tight, with the gun being shared between six different boats. Grant Nixon while having no gun, was leading through consistency until his electrics forced him out of the final four races.
Sunday dawned with light airs, and the beautiful SE orientated course I laid in the forecast SE, was pulled up and laid in a NW after a short postponement. Once racing we rattled through the first six races quite quickly, then needed to reset the course for the SE that briefly came back. We managed three races on this course before calling lunch as the breeze faded away. After lunch we had a N orientated course with three top marks spread to pick from, this was the course we ran the final races on. Our N courses were Windward/Leeward two laps downwind finish and the SE course we were Windward/Leeward Upwind finish two laps.
The behaviour over the weekend was exemplary, everyone acknowledging penalties, and doing them without delay. This was great to see as today we had crowds of up to 30 people at times watching the racing 5m behind the skippers, and I didn’t hear one expletive, which is great for the sport.
Congratulations to Grant Lane, the well-deserved 2017 North Island Marblehead Champion. At lunchtime today there was less than 10 points between 1st and 4th, and Grant came out after lunch and banged out five firsts in a row which gave him the jump on the pack.
Grant Nixon made a great comeback from carrying four DNF’s on Saturday to pip Carl Smith into 2nd by 2 points, top effort guys!
It was my first major regatta as PRO, and I would like to commend all who participated, and made it the success it was, Westhaven Radio Sailing Club appreciate the manner in which this event was conducted.
Congrats to all.
